The Gion Festival will begin soon. The festival will take place in Kyoto city. The Gion Festival is a huge festival that stars on July 1st and continues for one month. People say in ８６９ as a prayer to the gods to stop a major disease. In the Edo period, people started to use beautiful floats colled yama and hoko. The main events of the festival are Yoi-yama, on July 16th, and Yamahoko, on 17th. Yamahoko-Junko is the 23 yama appearing in this parade are 6 meters tall and weight 1.5 tons, while the 8 hoko are 25 meters tall and weight 12 tons. Most of them were made about 500 years ago, and they are made with beautiful decorations from Belgium, Turkey and other countries. This parade is the highlight of the Gion Festival.
